Turkish backed offensive in Aleppo

Turkish backed offensive launched in Aleppo

30.11.2024

A major offensive led by Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) on the city of Aleppo has been underway since the morning of November 29, 2024. The jihadist militia HTS, which emerged from Al-Qaeda, is one of the numerous militias that have established their reign of terror in the occupied areas of northern Syria in recent years. They are under the control of the Turkish state and receive all the necessary support. For example, HTS has taken control of parts of Afrin, which has been occupied since 2018, and numerous frontline areas bordering the Autonomous Administration. It is considered brutal, well trained and well-equipped militarily. The HTS, like other Islamist militais that are part of the offensive, are often portrayed as “rebels” in the Western media. In reality, kidnappings, violence against women and the oppression of ethnic minorities are the order of the day in the areas they occupy.

The official authorities of the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) have made it clear that these attacks were initiated by Turkey and are part of a plan to further destabilize Syria and weaken the Autonomous Administration. It is clear that this is not simply an attack by one of the various Islamist groups in Syria, but part of the war that Turkey has been directly waging and planning in the region for years.

On Thursday evening, the jihadists had already succeeded in capturing dozens of villages around Syria’s largest city, Aleppo, and raising their flags there. On Friday morning, HTS began advancing on the city of Aleppo from several directions. Hundreds of civilians and soldiers of the Syrian regime have already been killed in the initial fighting. Pictures of severed ears, Islamic State patches on HTS uniforms and hoisted Turkish flags are currently flooding the internet. Meanwhile, numerous checkpoints and military stations have been abandoned by Syrian regime soldiers in a hurry. They left behind heavy weapons such as tanks and howitzers, which are now in the hands of the jihadists.

At the same time as the advance on Aleppo, the attacks on the self-governing areas further east have visibly intensified. While the jihadist groups on the front line near the occupied city of Mare have begun shelling the areas in the Shehba region with artillery, videos of armored columns preparing to advance into the self-administered areas were published at the same time. The affected self-governing region of Shehba is a refuge for tens of thousands of displaced people from the canton of Afrin, which was occupied in 2018, and is also located on the line connecting the two self-governing districts of Aleppo and the other parts of the self-government. Attacks by Turkey on nearby self-administered areas such as Minbic and Til Rifaat have steadily increased in recent months. In the same breath, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced through a spokesperson that they would no longer tolerate the alleged recent escalation of attacks on Turkey by the self-defense units. These are the same statements that Turkey had already made before the invasions in 2018 and 2019.

While large parts of the city of Aleppo have already fallen, many civilians have found refuge in the self-governing district of Sheikh Maqsoud. Meanwhile, the self-defense forces in the self-governed districts are preparing for resistance and the population is cleaning their weapons. Shouts of “Biji Berxwedana Sheikh Maqsoud” (Long live the resistance of Sheikh Maqsoud) and “An Serkeftin An Serkeftin” (success and nothing but success) are heard everywhere. Similarly, columns of the YPG and YPJ reached the city on Friday evening and were greeted by applauding people.

According to the situation, all democratic and revolutionary forces should get ready just like the people of Sheik Maqsoud and the defense forces of the revolution and be prepared for any eventuality!
